Laboratory Supervisor


Summary of Position

The Laboratory Supervisor organizes and directs the daily activities of the clinical laboratory scientists and is   responsible for supervising laboratory personnel, conducting and overseeing quality assurance and quality control, and collecting, analyzing, and interpreting lab results. The position also is responsible for duties delegated by the Laboratory Medical Director as allowable under CLIA.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Working with the medical director and laboratory manager to monitor the testing program of the laboratory to ensure the highest quality of testing and the highest level of customer service.
  • Directing the technical and administrative day to day operations of the laboratory.  Supervising and training staff.  
  • Leading individuals in work groups to continuously improve performance by creating an environment that assures application of quality principles and techniques to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Developing, implementing and evaluating strategic interdisciplinary programs which are consistent with the mission, values and goals of the Hospital.
  • Interviewing and recommending the selection of suitable candidates for employment.  Developing and implementing equitable criteria and processes for evaluation, promotion and termination of all staff within designated area of responsibility that meet system standards.
  • Developing strategies which emphasize the cultural changes necessary to fully realize the organization’s vision of patient safety and patient value added services.
  • Ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, law and requirements of requisite agencies by employing appropriate systems/processes.
  • Ensure that the physical plant and environment conditions of the laboratory are appropriate for the testing performed and provide a safe environment in which employees are protected from physical, chemical and biological hazards. 
  • Promptly and proficiently, and whenever necessary, identify needs for remedial training or continuing education to improve skills. 
  • Ensure that an approved procedure manual is available to all personnel responsible for any aspect of the testing process. 
  • Ensure operational adherence to applicable policies and procedures by all technical and operational staff. 
  • Perform other duties as required. 
  • Perform other responsibilities as mandated by Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and any other pertinent local, state or federal regulations

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Plan and ensure that all resources are available to conduct pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical procedures to meet the organization’s turn-around-time goals
  • Monitor Quality Management Systems and escalate non-conforming events as specified in the Quality Management Plan
  • Effectively lead others, work collaboratively and interactively with diverse staff within and across teams in the organization.

Qualifications Required for Position

  • Have earned a bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution.
  • Nationally board certified as a Medical Technologist from an accredited institution (1.e., ASCP, AMT).
  • Licensed as a CLS-Gen in Louisiana and potentially other states as the business demands.
  • The knowledge of theories, principles, and concepts typically acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree in a clinical laboratory science and five to six years of experience.
  • The analytical skills necessary to plan for, design or enhance moderate complexity systems and programs.
  • Experience in ensuring compliance to regulatory standards (i.e. CLIA, CAP, JC, CMS, DOH, etc.) and preparing for surveys are essential
  • The ability to effectively manage the employees within assigned units/departments and to persuade and negotiate with senior level managers on issues and programs that impact the assigned units/departments.
  • Work requires effectively dealing with conflicting views or issues and mediating fair workable solutions.

Work Environment

  • Work is performed during regular work hours, but will require evening and/or weekend hours to meet deadlines.
  • Work in varying degrees of temperature (heated or air conditioned).
  • Work under extreme pressures.
  • Position requires sitting for approximately 4-6 hours per day and walking for 2 hours per day.
  • Position requires light to moderate work with 50 pounds maximum weight to lift and carry.
  • Position requires reaching, bending, stooping, and handling objects with hands and/or fingers, talking and/or hearing, and seeing.
  • Work in laboratory areas that practice a blood borne pathogen protection plan
  • Work in laboratory areas that practice a Chemical Hygiene protection plan
